U.K. post-punk band, Squid, made their way down to the states to tour their latest album O Monolith, making a stop at The Observatory in Santa Ana, CA. The band, led by singer and drummer Ollie Judge, alongside with guitarists Louis Borlase and Anton Pearson, bassist Laurie Nankivell, and keyboardist Arthur Leadbetter, started the band in 2016. Interestingly enough, the band doesn't write their music together; Each band member writes on their own tune, then they collaborate to see how each piece works together; which explains the funkiness of some of their songs.

If the term eclectic was a band, Squid would be it. With their singing drummer, funky synths, cellos, trumpets, cowbells, and multiple guitars, Squid knows how to use their multi-talented skills to entertain an audience. The entire time I was watching them perform, I thought to myself, how are they not tired? Every member in the band was always doing two or more things at once, and genuinely, I was super impressed. Each member had their own contributing individual compositions, which is why they all meshed so well.

Launching the night off performing Swing (In a Dream), Squid wasted no time entertaining and captivating the crowd. The attendees could be seen moshing to the bands experimental tunes and everyone was screaming along to their lyrics. The band ended the night off closing with The Blades. Squid’s performance was a transformative experience that everyone should experience next time they’re in town.
